VO2 Max: The Number That Tracks Real Cardio Fitness

VO2 max is one of the best predictors of cardiovascular health. Here is what it means and how to improve it without living at the gym.

VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. Higher generally means a more efficient heart and lungs - and studies link it to lower risk of heart disease and early death.

How it is estimated

Laboratory tests are most accurate, but wearables and simple field tests give a useful estimate. The key input is your heart rate during hard effort, which is why knowing your zones helps.

Training to raise it

  • Add one or two interval sessions a week - short hard bursts with recovery.
  • Keep most other cardio in the easy zone so you can stay consistent.
  • Track progress with pace or heart-rate workouts rather than just duration.

Find your effort zones first with our Target Heart Rate Calculator, then measure improvement with the Pace Calculator on the same route over time.

VO2 max declines with age, but training can slow - and partly reverse - the drop well into later decades.

Consistency beats intensity. A modest weekly habit sustained for a year beats a heroic month that you quit.
