Portrait Distance
Calculate ideal shooting distance for portraits
How to use Portrait Distance
- 1Enter the focal length of the lens and the camera sensor height.
- 2Enter the height of the body you want to be full of images.
- 3View the shoot distance required to complete the drawing.
People shoot distance.
Distance = focal length x (ingestion height / sensor height)Using similar triangle principles, distance varies with focal length and the margin between the ingestion and the sensor size.
Longer focal lengths can be maintained at further distances under the same configuration, and can also flatten the lens and make people more natural.
** Vision is determined by shoot distance and has nothing to do with focal length** — this is the most frequently misunderstood photographic common sense. The long-focal lens "looks flat" is not because of focal length, but because of the need to shoot at longer distances during the photo shoot, which weakens the perusal. By the same token, wide-angled face-to-face "stuff your nose and magnify your chin" because it's too close. ** So the real meaning of "85mm fit for a human being" is that to get an 85mm view, you have to retreat to about 2-3 meters, and this distance is the sweet spot of nature. **
** Proposal for a different-faced view**: a vertical/skinned face + a little bit more focused (100-135 mm) + a little bit more condensed to make the face more flat and thinr; a big nose / want to weaken → avoid wide-angleded face, using a standard to medium-long focus + natural distance; an environmental image (human-to-scene relationship) 35-50 mm + appropriate distance, but with attention to wide-angled edge deformities. ** Core principle: The "good looking" of a human image depends mainly on distance, not on the lens, which is not the right distance and the most expensive human mirror can't be saved. **
| Shoot distance | Visualization | Nose/face | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 m | A strong vision. | The nose is exaggerated, the face is deformed. | Extreme close-up (McM) |
| 1 m | Minor deformation | It's a bit of a nose. | Half-portrait. |
| 2–3 m | Natural Perspective | Close to the eye. | Standard Image |
| 5 m+ | Compression is strong. | Face flat, background close. | Environmental human beings |

Frequently asked questions
Does this include late cutting?
Does not include; it assumes that the image is full of sensors. The effect of the later cut was to use longer focal lengths.
Why do people like the usual 85mm?
85mm compression senses natural and can fill the picture at comfortable distance.
What's the sensor's cut factor?
Equivalent focal length (sync focal length x cut-off factor) is used to obtain accurate distance.
Why do self-censorships look worse than others?
Two reasons: 1 ** too close ** ** ** ** * * * * * * ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** * * ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** * ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** * * ** * * ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** Solved: far from 1.5 to 2 m with a back-up camera + self-caption pole, or shorter focal length (with a slightly more focused camera/digit to 2 x)**, with a much more perceptive view of nature. And that explains why a lot of people "I look better in the mirror" -- mirrors are: 1:1 reflection, and distance is close to real social distance.
How far is that station?
Depending on the number and the lens. Principle 1: Reduce visual deformations with a little focus (85-135 mm) and back to sufficient distance (blank-polling of both sides of the face, small middle face); 2 For everyone to try to be on the same plane (on the steps of the station) and to ensure that they are all in the depths of the scene (disturbed, f/8); ** For 10 people, 50 mm would have to be back to about 5-6 metres**, with 35 mm to be replaced if the site was not sufficient, but with a slight deformation of the edge. The tripod + self-censor timing/control is a requirement.
