Aspect Ratio
Calculate aspect ratios from width and height
How to use Aspect Ratio
- 1Enter the original width and height, or pick a common preset like 16:9.
- 2Specify one output side (width or height); the other is derived from the ratio.
- 3Read the converted dimensions and compare cropping across ratios.
What is aspect ratio?
width : height = output width : output heightAspect ratio is the width-to-height proportion of a frame or image, written as 'width:height'. Scaling while keeping the ratio avoids distortion: as long as the output sides keep the same proportion, content is neither squashed nor stretched.
Common ratios are 16:9 (widescreen video), 4:3 (older TV) and 1:1 (square social images). Setting the right ratio in posters, video or mobile layouts keeps composition consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Why does stretching distort an image?
Because the scaled ratio differs from the original. Lock 'keep ratio' so the other side is computed automatically.
What is the difference between 16:9 and 4:3?
16:9 is wider, for modern TV and video; 4:3 is nearer square and was the older standard.
How do I make a photo 1:1?
Crop the longer side to the shorter, or enter the original size and target 1:1 to see the crop needed.
