Megapixel
Calculate megapixels from width and height
How to use Megapixel
- 1Enter the sensor width and height in pixels, or pick a common spec.
- 2The tool totals the pixels and converts to megapixels (MP).
- 3See the suggested printable size at a chosen DPI.
What are megapixels?
megapixels = (width × height) ÷ 1,000,000A megapixel (MP) is one million pixels; it describes a camera or image's resolving power. More pixels mean larger possible enlargements and finer detail.
But pixels are not the only quality factor: lens, sensor size and processing matter too. A few MP suffice for web sharing; A4 prints benefit from 12–24 MP.
Frequently asked questions
More pixels means sharper?
Up to a point, but lens and sensor size cap it; cramming pixels on a small sensor can add noise.
How many MP to print?
A 6×4 snap needs about 4 MP; A4 prints want 12 MP+, posters 24 MP+.
Are tens of MP on phones useful?
Mostly for multi-frame fusion and cropping; straight-out shots are limited by optics, so real gain is modest.
