Megapixel Aspects

View megapixels in different aspect ratios

How to use Megapixel Aspects

  1. 1Enter the total megapixels of the sensor or image.
  2. 2Choose the aspect ratio you want, such as 3:2, 4:3, or 16:9.
  3. 3Read the resulting width and height in pixels for that ratio.

Megapixels to pixel dimensions

totalPixels = MP × 1,000,000; width = √(totalPixels × (W/(W+H))); height = width × (H/W) normalized

A megapixel is one million pixels. The same megapixel count can map to different width and height depending on the aspect ratio.

Cameras commonly use 3:2 (DSLR/mirrorless), 4:3 (micro four thirds, phones), and 16:9 (video).

Frequently asked questions

Does more megapixels mean better quality?

Not always; sensor size, lens, and pixel quality matter as much as the count.

Why do phones list 4:3 but shoot 16:9 video?

Video crops the sensor to 16:9, which is why stills and video resolutions differ.

How do I get exact dimensions?

Use the calculator: it solves width × height = total pixels under your chosen ratio.
