Image Filesize

Estimate image file size for JPEG, PNG, RAW formats

How to use Image Filesize

  1. 1Pick the image type: photo (JPEG), transparent (PNG) or raw (RAW).
  2. 2Enter resolution (width × height) and estimated quality/compression.
  3. 3Read the estimated file size and compare formats.

How is image file size estimated?

bytes ≈ total pixels × bit depth × (1 − compression)

Image size is driven by resolution, bit depth and compression. A 12-megapixel photo is huge uncompressed; JPEG's lossy compression shrinks it to a few MB, PNG is lossless but larger, and RAW keeps all sensor data.

Usually JPEG < PNG for photos; but flat/line art is often smaller as PNG because lossless suits it. Estimating size before upload avoids limits and slow loads.

Frequently asked questions

Which is smaller, JPEG or PNG?

For photos JPEG is usually far smaller; for flat/line art PNG can win because lossless compression suits that content.

Why are RAW files so big?

RAW keeps unprocessed sensor data for editing, often several times the JPEG size.

Does doubling resolution double the size?

Uncompressed data doubles; compressed growth is a bit less but still clearly larger, so watch size on hi-res images.
