Long Division

Perform long division with step-by-step solution

How to use Long Division

  1. 1Enter the dividend (the number being divided) and the divisor (the number you divide by).
  2. 2Run the calculator to see the quotient and the remainder step by step.
  3. 3Read the full decimal result and, if it does not divide evenly, the remainder.

How long division works

dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder; 0 ≤ remainder < divisor

Long division repeatedly subtracts the largest multiple of the divisor that fits, bringing down digits until no remainder or a repeating decimal appears.

The remainder is what is left after the whole-number part of the quotient; it is always smaller than the divisor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the remainder?

The leftover amount when the dividend is not a whole multiple of the divisor.

Why does division sometimes repeat?

Some fractions have denominators with prime factors other than 2 and 5, forcing a repeating decimal.

Can the divisor be zero?

No, division by zero is undefined and the calculator will reject it.
