Fraction

Add, subtract, multiply, divide, and simplify fractions

How to use Fraction

  1. 1Pick an operation: add, subtract, multiply, divide, or just simplify a mixed/improper fraction.
  2. 2Enter the numerators and denominators (multiple fractions supported); the tool validates that no denominator is zero.
  3. 3Read the simplified result and toggle between improper and mixed-number display.

What are fraction operations?

a/b ± c/d = (ad ± bc)/bd; (a/b) × (c/d) = ac/bd

A fraction has a numerator and a denominator: the denominator is how many equal parts the whole is split into, the numerator is how many of those parts you take. To add or subtract you must first rewrite both with a common denominator; multiply top-by-top and bottom-by-bottom; divide by multiplying by the reciprocal.

Results are usually reduced: divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor to get the simplest form, and turn an improper fraction into a mixed number when the top is larger. Fraction arithmetic underpins ratios, probability, recipes and engineering measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Can the denominator be zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined, so the calculator warns you the moment a denominator is zero to prevent invalid output.

How do I enter a mixed number?

Enter the whole part first, then the numerator and denominator; results can also be toggled between improper and mixed form for easier reading.

Why is the result sometimes a repeating decimal?

A fraction becomes a repeating decimal when its denominator has prime factors other than 2 or 5. That is normal, and you can keep as many digits as you need.
