Distance

Calculate distances between points in 2D, 3D, and on Earth

How to use Distance

  1. 1Enter the coordinates or two place names, or pick two points on the map if available.
  2. 2Choose the model: straight-line (haversine) or route distance.
  3. 3Read the distance in your preferred units and the approximate travel time.

Straight-line versus travel distance

Haversine: d = 2R arcsin(√(sin²(Δφ/2) + cosφ₁cosφ₂ sin²(Δλ/2)))

The haversine formula gives the great-circle distance between two points on a sphere using their latitudes and longitudes.

Real travel distance is longer because roads and paths bend; use routing for driving or walking estimates.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the map distance differ from my GPS?

GPS routes follow roads; the straight-line value is the shortest possible across the surface.

What units can I use?

Kilometres, miles, or nautical miles depending on the selector.

Does elevation matter?

Haversine ignores hills; for small areas the error is negligible but mountains add real distance.
