About this calculator

This tool estimates income tax using a simplified progressive (marginal bracket) model. It is for educational planning only and is not tax advice.

How progressive tax works

Income is taxed in layers. The first portion is taxed at the lowest rate, the next portion at the next rate, and so on. Only the amount that falls inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

The formula

tax = Σ over brackets (taxable income in bracket × bracket rate). The effective rate is total tax ÷ taxable income.

Example

With brackets 0–10k at 10% and 10k–40k at 20%, 30k of income yields 1,000 + 4,000 = 5,000 in tax — an effective rate of about 16.7%.

Important

Real systems include deductions, credits, and regional rules. Consult a qualified professional before filing.

How income tax works: progressive brackets

tax = Σ(bracket income × bracket rate) − quick deduction

Most countries use progressive rates: income is split into brackets, lower parts taxed low and higher parts higher—not all at the top rate.

The gap between gross and net comes from three sources: mandatory insurance, allowances/standard deduction, and the progressive tax itself. Using deductions fully lowers the base legally.

This tool uses simplified brackets for quick planning—great for yearly estimates and 'how much more I keep after a raise'. For filing, follow local tax law.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't all income taxed at the top rate?

Progressive tax only applies the higher rate to the portion above each threshold; lower portions stay low, so effective rate is below the top.

What do itemized deductions do?

They directly reduce taxable income, lowering tax. Mortgage interest, donations, insurance—using them fully saves legally.

Is this estimate accurate?

It uses simplified brackets for speed. Real filing involves credits, capital gains, and special rules—consult local tax authority.
